Tasting Notes

The most important part of the process involved in drilling down and trying capture a wine in words is the wine’s first impression. The label, the maker, the vintage, the history, the soil, etc., all are secondary to that first taste. The write-ups that come later are built on these first notes, so I thought I would leave a trail of my first impressions.

Some wines don’t show well the first time through. A lot depends on when the bottle was opened and what sort of wine it purports to be - age-worthy, gulpable, somewhere in between. But regardless of those variables all I have to go on is how the stuff tastes. My reason for posting them here is to reveal some of the thought that goes into wine writing, and the impossibility of turning a sensory experience into words, but it is also to challenge myself as to my own prejudices and blind spots. We’ll see how it goes.
